Since CNET gave an Editors' Choice award to the Panasonic ToughBook W2 in 2003, Panasonic has renamed the system the W4 and made a few modest enhancements to the laptop. The few case modifications involve adding a handy Wi-Fi on/off switch and a connector for Panasonic's optional port replicator; otherwise the W4's design and features are exactly the same as the W2's. The bulk of the changes on the W4, priced at $2,199, are inside the case. Panasonic has stocked the laptop with an assortment of previous-generation parts (no Core Solo or Core Duo processors here): a 1.2GHz Pentium M Ultra Low Voltage processor, 512MB of middling 400MHz RAM, a 40GB hard drive spinning at 4,200rpm, and integrated Intel graphics. Those components are nearly identical to the similarly priced Fujitsu LifeBook P7120's, though not quite as fresh as those on the less expensive, Core Solo-based Gateway NX100X. Nevertheless, the W4 matched the performance of both the Fujitsu and the Gateway on CNET Labs' performance benchmarks and should prove sufficient for basic business applications such as e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets. The W4 also displayed an impressive battery life, lasting 5 hours, 41 minutes in our drain tests. The LifeBook P7120 held out just 7 minutes more, while the NX100X trailed far behind both competitors, lasting an average 3 hours, 6 minutes. Like its predecessor, the W4 is covered by a lengthy three-year standard warranty (most consumer laptops are covered for only one year). In addition, Panasonic provides paid shipping for repairs, along with lifetime, toll-free, 24/7 tech support--a package that's virtually unheard of these days. The company's support Web site includes troubleshooting guides, FAQs, and driver downloads, as well as the option to contact a support rep via e-mail. I resisted the urge to write a product review imediately after I got the computer, at which time I was utterly smitten. It is the coolest gadget I've ever owned and I am the envy of all my friends. Obviously it's super light- when I first picked it up it felt like a toy and I was sure the battery was not in (it was). It worked great out of the box and was getting about 6 hrs of battery life. The keyboard is reduced-size, but I got used to it pretty quick (the biggest inconvenience- I was missing the spacebar consistently with my right hand for a few days). In my smitten state, I would have written a glowing review that would have been helpful to nobody.

My biggest hesitation at the time I got it was knowing nothing about the tech support. The 3-year warranty was attractive, since I had just had a Dell that went to pieces right after the 1-yr warranty had expired. I was also concerned that I am just too rough a guy to successfully own a laptop, because the Dell I had bought a year before was in such bad shape (I hadn't actually dropped it on the floor or anything, just jostled it a lot in my backpack and briefcase). I was also wary because it was a pretty new product, and there weren't any customer reviews from people who'd owned one longer than a month (Hence this review- I hope it helps someone.) Here we are a year later- the battery life is still coming in at 5+ hours and the computer is performing well. I'm still the coolest guy around, even though my officemates all have thinkpads. My back is also thanking me- the difference between the 4.5 lb dellie and the 3 lb toughie is so much bigger than I ever expected. Unfortunately, I had a device conflict when I monkeyed with my network settings and had to call tech support. I'm pretty savvy, but this wasn't an obvious problem. After holding for about 30 seconds, I talked to this very chill guy who diagnosed my problem pretty easily, sent me an email summarizing how to fix it, and gave me his email to keep in touch with how it went. I compare this, of course, to Dell's famous customer service where I'd hold for 5 minutes and often get talked down to (not that they were bad or anything- overall Dell support is fine).
